REVIEW, ddr MAKAROV ARMORER TOOLS
(updated 09-20-2016)
Introduction
It's hard to do a job correctly if one doesn't have the proper tools. I have made a hobby of collecting armorer tools to go with the wide variety of firearms that come into my shop. Some I may never use, but are works of art, both in their concept and execution. Others are overly complicated for tasks that can be better performed with a hammer and punch. Here is a look at some of the many tools I've been designing and collecting over the last 20 years.

The East Germans produced a very nice armorer tool chest for the AKM (MPi-KM/KMS-72), RPK (MPi-LMG) and the Makarov (Pistole - M). With the help of John Baum at GermanManuals.com, I have figured out what they all are for. Here are the ones for the Makarov.

V 1 Fixture for changing barrel mounted on frame
Assembly Tool
V 3 Trigger guard assembly tool.
V 3 Frame mounted on trigger guard assembly tool.
Bulged Barrel Removal
V 5 Fixture for drilling out bulged barrel for slide removal and barrel replacement. Includes lathe fixture, mill fixture (lathe fixture attached to base), V5.2 6mm hex key, 17mm socket or open end wrench, and V5.1 press housing to drive slide off barrel
V 5 Fixture on base for milling
V 5 Pistol mounted in milling fixture
V 5 Drilling out barrel
V 5 Morse taper 3 brass-tipped ram
V 5.1 Morse taper 3 brass-tipped ram in R-8 adaptor, pressing slide over barrel remnants
V 5 Alternately drilling out barrel using lathe.
Main Spring
L 1 Gauge for inspecting mainspring contour
L 1 Gauge for inspecting mainspring contour in use
L 1.1 Gauge for inspecting main spring contour
L 1.1 Gauge for inspecting main spring contour in use
L 1.1 Gauge for inspecting main spring contour in use
Hammer
P L 4 Gauge for checking the gap between the hammer and firing pin
P L 4.1 Support plate for barrel insert
P L 4.1 Barrel insert for checking the gap between the hammer and firing pin. This is screwed onto the support plate.
P L 4.1 The pistol is pressed onto the fixture with the trigger pulled and the hammer pressed forward. The gauge measures the minimum and maximum gap between the front of the hammer and the back of the firing pin.
Sights
72-15.1:00 Rear sight adjustment
72-15.1:00 Rear sight adjustment in use
P L 3 Inspection gauge for minimum and maximum rear sight notch width.
P L 3 Inspection gauge for minimum and maximum rear sight notch width in use
L 5 Makarov. rear sight depth gauge
Firing Pin
P L 2 Gauge for inspecting shape of firing pin tip.
L 7 Firing pin protrusion gauge.
L 7 Firing pin protrusion gauge in use. Insert into the barrel with the trigger pulled and the hammer pressed forward. The outside of the gauge contacts the breech face, the inside rod contacts the firing pin. The firing pin must push the rod to a point equal to or greater than the lower step on the outside of the gauge (minimum), without extending past the upper step of the gauge (maximum).
Slide and Barrel
L 8 Gauge for checking barrel protrusion, disconnector height, and play between barrel and breech, first view.
L 8 Gauge for checking barrel protrusion, disconnector height, and play between barrel and breech, second view.
L 8 Gauge measuring play between slide (breech) and barrel. Insert in barrel, turn screw over front sight until it contacts front sight. Press on the slide attempting to move away from barrel. Observe the line scribed on outside of screw housing for maximum play.

Gauge measuring barrel protrusion. Press gauge into barrel. Front edge of slide will push front rod forward. Observe line for minimum 0.5mm protrusion

L 8 Gauge for checking disconnector height. With slide removed align with frame, pull trigger and hold in rearward position, the disconnector must be higher than the gauge.
Misc
W 3 Tool for removing stuck cleaning patch from barrel.
9x18mm dummy rounds Plastic with aluminum base.
