ARS GUNSMITHING: GLOCK™

(Updated 09-20-07)

The ARS Glock Grip Reduction

Glock™ makes some of the finest handguns in the world, however many shooters have difficulties with the grip circumference, grip profile and grip angle. Many shooters find the grip circumference, particularly on 10mm and .45 ACP models, too large for a comfortable firing position. Many shooters also find the grip angle annoying. The large hump on the backstrap forces the muzzle to point upward relative to the forearm. Breaking the wrist angle to pull the muzzle down onto target increases stress on the wrist joint and slows target aquisition. Glock™ models with finger grooves have a greater circumference than those without, and if the grooves don't perfectly match the shooter's hand, they interfere with proper hand position. ARS developed the Glock™ Grip Reduction to address these issues. Many of the services ARS offers for the Glock™ can also be performed on the Khar pistols.

ARS will modify your Glock™ to decrease the overall grip circumference and change the grip angle. Removing the hump on the backstrap results in a straight profile similar to a Model 1911 with a flat mainspring housing. This smaller and more comfortable grip makes it easier to reach the magazine catch, shortens the distance to the trigger, gives you more natural sight alignment and better recoil control, mitigates potential slide-bite on large hands, and improves accuracy potential through a smoother trigger press. This modification does not affect any moving parts and is widely accepted by many Federal and State law enforcement agencies. It makes the weapon safer by giving the shooter more control: it is functionally no different than changing the grips on any other pistol or revolver. Glock™ has stated "We will continue to service and repair all Glock pistols regardless of what after-market product has been fitted to the pistol."

Glock™ Grip Reductions are scheduled 4 times a year to ensure a fast turnaround, 7-10 days from the batch-start date. See examples of our Glock™ Customizing in the Glock™ Photo Gallery.

Standard Grip Reduction

By filling the hollow cavity behind the magazine well with an industrial resin and recontouring the grip, ARS reduces the grip circumference and improves the grip angle to one that seems to melt into your hand. ARS then applies a beautiful non-slip texturing. The special resin is designed to handle 250 degree F. constant temperature in a dry environment with occasional spikes to 300-325 degrees F. By carefully relieving the trigger guard and replacing the checkering on the front strap, you can obtain a higher grip on the pistol which reduces muzzle-flip. By skillfully contouring the frame on either side of the trigger guard, ARS can slightly shorten the distance to the trigger.

A standard reduction includes changing the square trigger guard to a more practical round one. ARS also fills the curved cutout on the bottom rear of the magazine well and extends the new grip surface over it. ARS bevels the magazine well to a funnel for faster magazine insertion. Beveling the square tang further improves comfort . Finger grooves add significantly to the size of the frame and don't always match the shooter's fingers. On a standard reduction, ARS removes these finger grooves.

ARS's proprietary texturing is fantastic. It's coarse where you need it to be, and gradually tapers to a finer texture at the web of your hand and at the edges of the grip, blending perfectly with the original surface. The one low price for the Glock™ Grip Reduction includes front and backstrap and trigger guard. Please include any special instructions, such as leaving the trigger guard square or retaining the finger grooves. We not need the slide for frame-only modifications. Please send only the complete frame. Please do not strip the frame, so we can insure the resin has not leaked into the mechanism cavity which would prevent proper reassembly.

Partial Reduction

Some shooters with larger hands don't mind the overall size of the Glock™ grip - they just dislike the large hump on the back. Request a "backstrap-only" grip reduction and ARS will leave the frontstrap and trigger guard stock. No additional charge.

"Beavertail" Tang Extension

If you have ever been cut by the Glock™ slide, this modification option may be for you. ARS extends the tang slightly with metal-reinforced resin to keep the web of your hand away from the slide. The standard grip reduction usually changes the grip angle enough to make the tang extension unnecessary, but for some people with large or fleshy hands, it makes shooting much more pleasant.

Long Slides: Compact and Sub-Compact Models

A longer slide means a longer barrel, longer sight radius, and higher velocity. Some shooters find the balance superior to that of a standard length slide. We produce the effect of a "long-slide" gun by reducing the grip length of a full-size gun to accept the magazine of the compact version of the same caliber. For example, our 19L is a Model 17 reduced to take a Model 19 magazine; the 26L is a Model 19 reduced to take the Model 26 magazine. Additional advantages are easier concealment and easier draw from concealment holsters.

Green Glocks

If you have a green frame Glock™, we can still do the grip reduction, and dye your frame black.

Hand Matting

We engrave the top of your slide with hundreds of parallel lines that give a beautiful custom look while reducing glare from the flat surface.

Nose Job

We round the front of your slide to duplicate the rounded nose of the subcompact models. This variation eliminates some of the blockiness, provides for more comfortable concealed carry, and eases re-holstering. Includes refinishing the slide with METACOL III black.

Cocking Serrations

We machine cocking serrations in the front of your slide to match those on the rear. A great custom feature that simplifies press-checks. Five cuts on small frame (covers Glock™ logo), seven on large frames (covers "Austria").

Technical data on the ARS METACOL™ refinishing are described in detail on the METACOL™ Finishes section of this website.
